A salesman was driving through Vermont on business, and was on his way to a scheduled sales call…when he got lost. He pulled to the side of the road, got out, and put his map on the hood of the car, and tried to figure out where he was. About that time a local farmer came by in his truck. "Can I help you?’ he asked. The man said, "I’ve got a problem, I’m a salesman from out of town and I have a sales call to make in an hour. Can you help me?"
"Well sure," said the farmer. "Do you know where you are?" "Sure…," the man replied, pointing to map. "I know where I am…I’m right here. Is that right?" The farmer said, "That’s right." And then the farmer asked, "Do you know where you are going?" "Sure," came the reply, "my sales call an hour away…(pointing to map), that’s right here." The farmer said, "Well let me get this right, you know where you are and you know where you are going, You ain’t lost, you just need directions."
You know for most of us, this is true. Most of us know where we are. We’ve looked at our lives and thought about our lives for a long, long time. We may be embarrassed or disappointed about where we are, and maybe even our friends and family don’t know where we are, but we know. And maybe we haven’t shared our dreams about where we want to be with our family or friends. But I figure most of us deep down have some feeling about where we want to be.
We’re not lost, we just need directions. We need directions to get us from here to there. It’s about:
-having clarified values;
-understanding of your God given SHAPE; (spirituality, heart, abilities, personalities, experience)
-being committed to God’s purpose for your life.
What kind of shape are you in?
